The American Express SmartEarn Credit Card is easiest to understand as a focused rewards card, not an all-purpose credit card. Its appeal comes from accelerated Membership Rewards earning on selected everyday online merchants and from its relatively approachable annual fee. For the right user, someone who regularly spends on platforms such as Zomato, Amazon, Flipkart, Uber, Myntra, and BookMyShow—it can be a useful entry point into the American Express ecosystem.
The clearest use case is concentrated online spending. If a large part of your regular budget goes to food delivery, e-commerce, ride-hailing, entertainment, or similar partner platforms, accelerated points can make a ₹495-fee card worthwhile.
SmartEarn can also serve as a relatively low-fee introduction to American Express. Users describe it as a first Amex card that may help establish a relationship with the issuer and, over time, support consideration for higher-tier products.
The fee-waiver threshold is another positive. A cardholder who naturally spends at least ₹40,000 in the qualifying year may effectively avoid the annual fee, provided the issuer’s conditions are met. That gives consistent users a simple break-even test: estimate eligible yearly spending, compare the value of rewards you can actually redeem, and then decide whether the card earns a place in your wallet.
The biggest change in the SmartEarn conversation is not just the posted earn rate.
It is the value of the points after they are earned. The sentiment report highlights American Express’s unpooling of Membership Rewards points and says this has reduced the appeal of accumulating points across several Amex cards for a larger redemption. In the past, a user might have viewed an entry-level card as one component of a broader points strategy. Under the newer approach described by users, that strategy may no longer work in the same way.
This matters particularly to applicants comparing SmartEarn with another Amex card.
A high earn rate on a narrow set of transactions is less compelling if the resulting points cannot be combined as expected or if the available redemption options do not match your goals. Before applying, decide what you actually want from the rewards: immediate statement-level value, vouchers, travel-related redemption, or an aspirational transfer. Then verify that the current terms for this specific card support that outcome.
This is the first question a prospective applicant should answer: can I currently apply through a legitimate American Express channel for this exact product? If the answer is no, a comparison of rewards and fees may be academic. Do not rely on old referral links, outdated articles, or an informal promise that a different application will automatically become SmartEarn. Check the current issuer communication and the actual terms shown during the application journey.
Existing cardholders face a different decision.
If you already have SmartEarn, the card may continue to be useful for eligible partner spending and fee-waiver progress, subject to the current terms.
A paused new-application channel does not by itself mean an existing account is being closed. At the same time, continuing to hold the card should be an active choice: monitor the rewards you receive, assess acceptance, and reconsider the card if the points structure no longer fits your redemption plans.
