HDFC Bank waives the renewal fee if you spend ₹1L in the previous year, which is about ₹8,333 a month. If your card spend sits below that, treat ₹1,000 as a real yearly cost that your rewards have to clear first.

On ₹10,000 of spend in the top category that is ₹500 back, so about ₹6,000 a year if you hit it every month. Fuel, EMI transactions, Wallet loading, Rent payments earn nothing at all.

At ₹1L of yearly spend the card returns roughly ₹1,000 at its general rate of about 1%, against a ₹1,000 renewal fee. That does not clear the fee on its own, so this card only makes sense if the lounge visits or the co-brand benefits are worth the gap to you.
