Who InstaPay is really for

InstaPay is for people who already hold an AU Small Finance Bank credit card and want to pay shop QR codes on credit at no cost. It is a free, virtual RuPay card that borrows its limit from your main AU card and pays a small cashback on everyday merchant UPI.

If you do not have an AU card, this is not really a card you can pick on its own. AU's terms say the InstaPay limit is shared with your existing primary AU card.

Where the 1% stops: ₹10,000 a cycle

InstaPay pays 1% cashback on selected merchant categories: grocery stores and supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies and departmental stores. Three rules shape what you actually get:

  • Each transaction must be ₹200 or more to earn.
  • Cashback is capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.
  • Other merchant categories and person-to-person transfers earn nothing.

So the 1% runs out at ₹10,000 of eligible spend in a cycle. Spend ₹6,000 a month on groceries and medicines and you earn ₹60. Spend ₹15,000 and you still earn ₹100. The most you can make in a year is about ₹1,200. A ₹180 chemist bill earns nothing; a ₹250 one earns ₹2.50.

There is also a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on fuel transactions of ₹400 to ₹5,000.

A second card, a second bill

The shared limit has two side effects users run into. Every rupee you spend on InstaPay comes out of your main AU card's limit. And InstaPay has its own statement and its own payment, so you can miss its due date even while your main card is paid on time. Set a separate reminder or auto-debit.

Some existing AU cardholders also report application loops or rejections when adding a second AU card, tied to AU's multiple-card rules. Apply from inside the AU app and call AU if it fails, rather than re-applying.

Linking it to UPI

  • Use a UPI app whose mobile number matches the one on your AU card. AU names BHIM, Paytm and MobiKwik.
  • Set a new UPI PIN; your card PIN does not work for UPI.
  • If AU renews or reissues the card, link it again.
  • Payments work for domestic merchants only.

Worth adding to your AU wallet?

Yes, if you already hold an AU card and spend under ₹10,000 a month on grocery, pharmacy and dining QR payments. It costs nothing and turns that spend into a little cashback.

If your UPI spend is higher, or you do not bank with AU, a free card like Kiwi pays more on Scan & Pay. Read more about the bank in our AU Bank issuer guide.
