Frequently Asked Questions

₹2,999 + GST. It is waived if you spend ₹3 lakh in the card year.

Quick take

  • SBI Card PRIME costs ₹2,999 + GST a year and pays off only if you spend about ₹25,000 a month on it, mostly on dining, groceries, departmental stores and movies.
  • Its best parts are the quarterly Pizza Hut vouchers, the ₹7,000 milestone voucher and 12 lounge visits a year.
  • On ordinary spends it earns just 0.5%, which is why many Reddit users say the Cashback SBI Card suits them better.

Looking for Reliance SBI Card PRIME? That is a different card with Reliance Retail rewards. This page covers the standard SBI Card PRIME.

Where PRIME earns well

All rates are per ₹100, and 4 Reward Points equal ₹1.

  • Dining, groceries, departmental stores and movies: 10 points, about 2.5%. Accelerated points are capped at 7,500 a month.
  • Utility bills on standing instruction: 20 points, about 5%.
  • Your birthday, plus the day before and after: 20 points, up to 2,000 points a year.
  • Everything else: 2 points, about 0.5%. Fuel earns nothing.

The vouchers matter more than the points for most holders. Spend ₹50,000 in a quarter and you get a ₹1,000 Pizza Hut voucher, up to ₹4,000 a year. Cross ₹5 lakh in a card year and you get a ₹7,000 Yatra or Pantaloons voucher. New cardholders also get a ₹3,000 e-gift voucher after paying the joining fee.

SBI Card PRIME lounge access

You get 8 complimentary domestic lounge visits a year and 4 international visits through Priority Pass, with no more than 2 international visits in a quarter. Domestic visits work with the card at participating lounges. For international lounges, you first have to request the Priority Pass membership from SBI Card; the credit card alone will not get you in.

Lounge lists change, so check the current list on the SBI Card website before you travel. Our data lists no free guest visits, so assume guests are charged.

Is the ₹2,999 annual fee worth it?

The renewal fee is waived only if you spend ₹3 lakh in the card year. So here is a year that justifies PRIME:

  • ₹2 lakh on dining and groceries: about ₹5,000 in points.
  • ₹1 lakh on other spends: about ₹500.
  • All four Pizza Hut vouchers: ₹4,000.

That is around ₹9,500 back on ₹3 lakh, the fee waived, and lounges on top. Now take the same ₹3 lakh spent mostly online or on fuel: you earn about ₹1,500 at most, far short of ₹9,500, and fuel earns nothing at all. The card is good or bad depending entirely on where your money goes.

Also note: users report a ₹99 + GST fee per redemption, so redeem in batches. The forex markup is 3.5% in our records, so keep another card for foreign spends. PRIME is not issued on RuPay, so it cannot be used for UPI.

Who should not take PRIME

First-time applicants, mainly. Several users say branch staff sold them PRIME as a first card, and they paid ₹2,999 for rewards they never used. Start with a lower-fee card and upgrade once you know your spending pattern.

Is PRIME worth it for you?

SBI Card PRIME is worth it for a settled spender who puts ₹3 lakh or more a year on the card, eats out and buys groceries on it, and actually collects the vouchers and uses the lounges. For that person it returns about 3% plus a comfortable travel bundle.

If you are not that person, the fee is hard to justify. And if someone offers you PRIME lifetime free through your employer or alumni network, take it: at zero fee, it is an easy card to keep.
