Frequently Asked Questions

Users who asked Standard Chartered say it is per calendar month: ₹1,000 on online spends and ₹500 on other spends.

SC Smart in three lines

  • Standard Chartered's Smart Credit Card pays 2% on eligible online spends (up to ₹1,000 a month) and 1% on everything else (up to ₹500 a month). Fuel earns nothing.
  • People keep it for the bills other cashback cards ignore: school fees, insurance premiums, NPS and tax payments made online.
  • The catches are on the way out: users report a ₹2,500 minimum before you can redeem, and sudden limit cuts.

This page is about Standard Chartered Smart only. It is not SC DigiSmart, Amex SmartEarn or RBL Platinum ShopSmart.

The bills it still pays on

Most cashback cards now exclude education, insurance, government payments and NPS. In 11 of the 15 Reddit threads we reviewed, users say SC Smart still earns 2% on these when paid online. Standard Chartered does not name these categories on its page, and its T&C decide what counts as "online", so check your merchant's code on the Monzy MCC finder before a big payment. School fee gateways often code as MCC 8211.

Rent and wallet loads come up too. Some users say they get 2% on them; treat that as user experience, not a bank promise.

A ₹2 lakh premium, and the monthly cap

The caps are monthly (users who asked SC say per calendar month, not per billing cycle), and that matters more than the rate:

  • Pay a ₹2 lakh insurance premium in one month: you get ₹1,000, the cap, not ₹4,000.
  • Split school fees of ₹1.5 lakh into three monthly payments of ₹50,000: you get ₹1,000 each month, ₹3,000 in total.
  • Add ₹20,000 of offline spend in any month: another ₹200, inside the ₹500 cap.

The most the card can pay is ₹1,500 a month. If your big bills can be spread across months, you earn far more.

Waiting for ₹2,500

The most common complaint (12 threads) is the redemption floor. Users say you cannot redeem until you have built up ₹2,500 of cashback. At 2%, that is ₹1.25 lakh of online spend. A heavy fee payer gets there in about three months at the cap. A light user may wait a year or more, and users say closing the card early can mean losing what you have collected. This was not on the bank page we checked, so confirm it in your rewards portal.

What the ₹499 fee really costs on Smart

The fee is ₹499 + GST. Standard Chartered's page shows the first year waived as a special offer for new SC customers, and the renewal reversed if you spend ₹1.2 lakh in the year before, about ₹10,000 a month. If you use the card for fees and premiums, you will likely clear that. Even if you do not, ₹589 is covered by about ₹29,500 of online spend at 2%.

Other details: a 3-month EMI on eligible purchases at 0.99% a month with nil processing fee, no lounge access, and a forex markup that our older card data puts at 3.5% (not confirmed on the bank page).

Limit cuts and the app

Five threads describe Standard Chartered cutting limits sharply without useful notice, sometimes to under ₹50,000. That breaks the main reason to hold the card, because a large annual fee or premium no longer fits. Seven threads also mention a dated app, slow payment posting and slow complaint handling. Users also ask whether changing the billing cycle cancels the introductory interest-free period, so ask SC before you change yours.

So, should you get SC Smart?

Get it if you pay large education, insurance, NPS or tax bills online every year and your other cards earn nothing on them. Spread the payments across months and you will clear both the fee waiver and the redemption floor without trying.

Skip it if you mainly shop online. Users say the Cashback SBI Card pays 5% there. Low spenders who want cashback credited automatically every month will be happier with Amazon Pay ICICI.
