Frequently Asked Questions

Joining is free. Renewal is ₹499 + GST, waived on ₹50,000 of spend in 12 months, and not charged on cards issued as lifetime free.

"Lifetime free" in the app, ₹499 on the letter

This is the most common Uni complaint on Reddit. The Uni app said the card was lifetime free, and then the welcome letter printed ₹499 + tax a year. Here is how it works. Joining is free. Renewal is ₹499 + GST, waived if you spend ₹50,000 in the card year, about ₹4,200 a month. YES Bank says cards issued as lifetime free are not charged the renewal.

So screenshot the lifetime-free promise before you apply. If your letter shows ₹499, ask YES Bank or Uni in writing which rule applies to your account. If you will spend ₹50,000 a year anyway, it does not matter.

With that settled, UNI is a simple card: unlimited 1% back as Uni coins and a 0% forex markup. Many users convert their rewards into 24K digital gold through the Uni app, and threads often call the card Uni Gold X.

This page covers the YES Bank-issued UNI card. Uni has also issued cards with Bank of Baroda, and Union Bank's UNI-CARBON is unrelated.

What 1% and zero forex add up to

₹20,000 a month on the card earns ₹200 a month, or ₹2,400 a year. That is several times the ₹499 renewal, and it clears the ₹50,000 waiver too.

The zero forex markup matters more for some people. On a ₹1 lakh semester fee or foreign trip, a typical 3.5% markup costs ₹3,500; on UNI it costs nothing. Always pay in the merchant's currency, and decline when a terminal offers to charge you in rupees, because that conversion carries its own markup. Users ask whether foreign spends also earn the 1%. Our data does not say, so check your first statement.

There is no lounge access, so pair it with a lounge card if you need one. A 1% fuel surcharge waiver is included.

YES or Bank of Baroda: why the issuer matters

Users ask whether they can pick Bank of Baroda instead of YES during the Uni application. Our data does not confirm that you can choose. It matters because users report YES Bank allows one YES credit card per customer. If you want Kiwi, POP-CLUB or another YES card later, a YES-issued UNI may block it. Decide which one you want first.

What else users report

  • Credit limits lower than their other cards, and more than one bureau enquiry during approval.
  • Applications stuck "under review" for weeks, with little help from Uni support.
  • Months of automated replies when trying to close the card.
  • On the positive side, a quick paperless application and a card design people like.

Where UNI fits in your wallet

Yes, as a backup card for foreign-currency spends: travel, study fees and international subscriptions. Flat 1% on everything and 0% forex is a useful pairing, and the fee disappears at ₹50,000 a year.

It is a weak choice if you want lounges, where users point to the ixigo AU Credit Card, or if you plan to get another YES Bank card. For the gold side of the story, read our Uni Gold X review.
