Frequently Asked Questions

No. Even if the joining fee is waived, the monthly core-benefit fee (for example ₹99 + tax for cashback) and any merchant plan fees still apply.

A ₹30,000 month on BYOC, after the subscription

BYOC, YES Bank's "Build Your Own Card", is a credit card with a subscription attached. Here is what a fairly heavy month looks like on the cashback option.

You spend ₹30,000 on eligible purchases. The 1% cashback perk pays ₹300. The perk itself costs ₹99 + 18% GST, about ₹117 a month. You keep about ₹183. Over a year that is roughly ₹2,200, before the one-time card fee of ₹249 + taxes for the eco-friendly card or ₹3,499 + taxes for metal.

Now drop the spend to ₹8,000. Cashback is ₹80, the fee is still ₹117, and you are paying YES Bank to hold the card. The break-even is about ₹11,700 of eligible spend every month.

How the pricing works

There is no classic annual fee and no spend-based waiver. You pay in three layers:

  • A one-time card fee, set by the material you pick.
  • A monthly fee for your core benefit: 1% cashback, or 8 reward points per ₹200 on the rewards option. Our record does not give a rupee value for those points.
  • An optional Silver, Gold or Platinum merchant plan for up to 10% at chosen merchants like Swiggy, BookMyShow, Uber and BigBasket. That 10% is capped at ₹100 a month in our record, so a plan can earn at most ₹1,200 a year. Get its price in writing before you add one.

Rent, wallet loads, utilities, fuel, education, government payments, insurance, EMI and cash withdrawals earn nothing.

"It is lifetime free," said the agent

This is the most common BYOC story on Reddit. Users describe calls where an agent pitched BYOC as free, or sent an SMS link for BYOC after a Kiwi or other application was turned down. Several later found monthly charges on statements, some on cards they never activated.

If BYOC arrives and you did not ask for it, do not activate it. Write to YES Bank saying what you applied for, that you did not consent to BYOC, and that you want it closed with all fees reversed. Keep the complaint number and escalate to the nodal officer, then the RBI Ombudsman, if needed. Users report reversals mostly after escalating.

What BYOC does well

The one thing holders genuinely like is a metal card for a one-time fee, without the income bar of premium metal cards. You also get 1 domestic lounge visit a quarter if you meet a spend condition in the previous quarter. Our sources disagree on that condition (₹35,000 or ₹50,000), so confirm it. Forex is about 3.5% in our records, which matches what users quote.

Our take on BYOC

Only take BYOC if you chose it yourself, want the metal finish, and spend well over ₹12,000 a month on eligible categories. For most people a no-fee card returns more. Users who like the modular idea prefer AU Bank LIT, where you can switch paid features off. If you applied for Kiwi, stick with Kiwi.
