Frequently Asked Questions

Our record does not say. Check the card format on your offer in the Paytm app before you accept.

Digital or Mobile: the same ₹149, different cashback

HDFC issues two Paytm cards at the same ₹149 + GST fee on Visa: this Digital card and the Paytm Mobile Credit Card. Our records list them as one product, but HDFC's own pages show different cashback grids, so check which one your Paytm offer shows before you accept.

  • Digital pays 2% on Paytm Scan & Pay at select merchants, 2% on Swiggy and Uber, and 1% on other retail.
  • Mobile pays 2% on Paytm Mall, Movies and Mini Apps, 1% on other Paytm spends and 0.5% on retail.
  • Digital waives the first-year fee on ₹1,000 of spend in 40 days. Mobile gives you 30 days.

If you mostly pay by QR, order food and take cabs, the Digital grid is the better of the two.

Where the ₹1,000 a month stops

Every bucket has its own cap:

  • Paytm Scan & Pay: 2%, up to ₹250 a month, reached at ₹12,500.
  • Swiggy and Uber: 2%, up to ₹250 a month, reached at ₹12,500.
  • Other retail, including Paytm transactions: 1%, up to ₹500 a month, reached at ₹50,000.

A realistic month: ₹3,000 on Swiggy and Uber, ₹4,000 paid by Paytm QR and ₹8,000 on everything else. That earns ₹60 + ₹80 + ₹80, so ₹220. Over a year that is about ₹2,640, on a card that costs almost nothing to keep.

One gap in the data: HDFC says Scan & Pay pays 2% only at "select merchants" and does not list them. Your neighbourhood kirana's QR may earn 1%. Check the first statement. You also get up to ₹150 cashback on your first two transactions, and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver.

Keeping the fee at zero

The joining fee goes away if you spend ₹1,000 in the first 40 days. The renewal fee goes away if you spend ₹25,000 in a year, about ₹2,100 a month. Anyone who uses the card at all will clear both.

The co-brand problem users raise

Two complaints come up again and again in our sentiment report, and they are about Paytm HDFC cards as a group:

  • Users report that Paytm co-brands are left out of HDFC's instant discounts on Amazon, Flipkart and Apple sales. Check each sale's eligible-card list.
  • Users say holding a Paytm co-brand made it harder to get a core HDFC card such as Millennia, and some closed it and waited before applying. Others report getting a core card anyway. HDFC has not published a rule.

If you close it later, pay the full balance first, and remember that closing your oldest card shortens your credit history.

Our take on the Paytm HDFC Digital card

Take it if it showed up pre-approved in your Paytm app and you need a first card. It is cheap, the waivers are easy, and Swiggy, Uber and QR spends earn 2%.

Do not treat it as your long-term HDFC card. If a core HDFC card is the goal, users prefer HDFC Millennia, which they say pays 5% on major categories and qualifies for HDFC's sale offers. Our first-time credit card guide covers other starter options.
