Recommendation
10 points per ₹100 on dining, grocery, entertainment and international spends (capped at 1,000 a month), 8,000 welcome points, 10,000 points each at ₹2.5 lakh and ₹4 lakh annual spend, a gated domestic lounge visit each quarter and a monthly movie ticket worth up to ₹100.
If you read about RBL Platinum Maxima a while ago, the numbers you saw are probably out of date. Older listings showed a ₹2,999 fee, a ₹3 lakh spend waiver and 8 lounge visits a year. RBL's current product page shows something different: ₹2,000 + GST to join and every year, no spend waiver stated, and 1 domestic lounge visit a quarter that you earn by spending.
This page covers Platinum Maxima only. Platinum Max costs ₹999 and Platinum Maxima Plus costs ₹2,500. The names are close, the terms are not.
RBL advertises "2.7% value back on grocery and dining", but its page does not show how that figure is reached. Here is what the card actually earns:
The 1,000-point cap fills at about ₹10,000 of 10X spend a month. At the best point value that is ₹250 a month, or ₹3,000 a year. Ordinary spend at 2 points earns about 0.5% at best.
The milestones do the heavy lifting. You get 10,000 points at ₹2.5 lakh of eligible spend in a year and another 10,000 at ₹4 lakh. Add 8,000 welcome points in year one (use the card within 30 days and pay the fee on time).
A worked year at ₹4 lakh, filling the 10X cap every month, at ₹0.25 a point:
Spend ₹3 lakh of ordinary spend and skip the 10X categories, and you get about ₹1,500 from base points plus ₹2,500 from the first milestone. Fuel, rent, utilities, insurance, wallets, education and EMI earn nothing and do not count toward milestones.
The other perks are small: one free movie ticket worth up to ₹100 a month on BookMyShow when you buy two, and a domestic lounge visit in a quarter after you spend ₹35,000 in the previous one.
Most Reddit stories about this card start with an upgrade offer, often from the cheaper ShopRite card. Users report being charged joining or annual fees after an upgrade they took to be free, and a long fight to reverse fees on cards never activated. Many of those threads are about Maxima Plus, but the pattern is the same. Ask RBL in writing whether the upgraded card is lifetime free before you say yes.
Keep it if you got it lifetime free, or if you really spend ₹4 lakh a year with ₹10,000 a month on dining, grocery and entertainment. The milestones make the fee easy to recover then.
Decline it if you would use it only for sale discounts. ShopRite does that for far less. If you travel abroad, World Safari is the RBL card users prefer, because this card's 3.5% forex markup in our data eats into the 10X on international spends.
