Frequently Asked Questions

HDFC does not publish a limit range. Users say Uno is often issued when your existing HDFC limit is below what Ultimo needs.

The catch: you probably wanted Ultimo

Many Uno holders never asked for Uno. Users report applying for the PhonePe HDFC Ultimo, which pays 10% on PhonePe bills, and being issued Uno, which pays 2%.

That does not make Uno a bad card. It is a ₹499 RuPay card that works on UPI and pays a little on bills and shop payments. But you should know what it is before you activate it, and you can decline activation if you wanted the other one.

The higher tier is the PhonePe HDFC Bank Ultimo. SBI Card runs separate PhonePe cards with their own rules.

What Uno earns

Rewards come as points marketed as a percentage. HDFC's page confirmed this grid in October 2026:

  • 2% on PhonePe recharges, utilities, bill payments and travel, up to 500 points a month.
  • 1% on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio, Swiggy, Zomato and Uber, up to 500 points.
  • 1% on UPI Scan & Pay, up to 500 points.

That is 1,500 points a month at most. A realistic month of ₹5,000 in PhonePe bills, ₹4,000 on the listed brands and ₹8,000 of Scan & Pay earns 100 + 40 + 80, so 220 points, about 2,640 a year. Our record does not give a rupee value per point, which decides whether that clears the ₹589 fee with GST. Points for each month's settled transactions post the following month.

When 2% turns into nothing

Users report that PhonePe sometimes adds a convenience fee when you pay a bill or recharge by credit card. On a ₹1,000 bill, 2% is 20 points, and users say the fee can match or exceed that.

So check the final payable amount at checkout. If a fee shows up, pay that bill on the biller's own site. Users say Uno's best use is small UPI payments at shops, where no platform fee applies.

Is your Uno fee-free?

Our record shows ₹499 + GST to join and the same each year, with no spend-based waiver. Some users still see "free" in the app, and one reported being charged the annual fee two months after getting the card without a joining fee. The welcome benefit is offered only when the joining fee applies, and its structure changed for applications from 1 August 2026. Get your fee terms in writing.

Getting from Uno to Ultimo

HDFC does not publish an upgrade route. Users say the switch to Uno is tied to your existing HDFC credit limit; one thread mentions ₹1.5 lakh for Uno and possibly ₹2 lakh for Ultimo, but that is a user estimate, not a published rule. If Ultimo is what you want, ask HDFC what limit it needs before you reapply.

Keep Uno, or skip it?

Keep it as a basic RuPay card for UPI payments at shops, especially if your offer came fee-free. It is a small, simple earner.

Do not take it for bill savings. If utility bills are the point, Ultimo pays five times as much, and users who compared cards preferred the fee-free Amazon Pay ICICI for bills without platform charges.
