Premium credit cards are easy to want and hard to justify. The lounge visits, the welcome vouchers and the milestones all sound good until the renewal fee lands. You are right to ask whether a few thousand rupees a year comes back to you. This page shows how to judge that for your own spending, with rupee maths on the cards people compare most.

A premium card is a bet that your spending earns back the fee. Most people lose it in one of three ways.
The test: take the fee with GST, count only vouchers you would use anyway, and value points at what you really redeem them for. If you do not clearly come out ahead at your real spend, the card is not premium for you; it is expensive. Our Regalia Gold devaluation note shows how fast it moves.
SBI Card PRIME costs ₹2,999 + GST, waived at ₹3 lakh a year. Put ₹2 lakh on dining and groceries, ₹1 lakh elsewhere, and collect all four Pizza Hut vouchers, and you get around ₹9,500 back. Spend the same ₹3 lakh mostly online or on fuel and you earn about ₹1,500 at most.
SBI Card ELITE costs ₹4,999 + GST, about ₹5,899, and the waiver needs ₹10 lakh. It earns its keep through up to ₹6,000 a year of movie tickets, 8 domestic and 6 international lounge visits with no spend target, and 1.99% forex. Our SBI lounge access guide covers the Priority Pass catch.
See more in our travel credit cards and the travel cards guide.
If your yearly spend is already far past every waiver above, look at the super-premium credit cards instead, and read our guide to super-premium cards for HNIs. Below that, a premium card you fully use beats a bigger one you half use.
Only if your spend crosses the fee waiver or earns clearly more than the fee. At ₹3 lakh, PRIME's fee is waived; dining and groceries return about ₹9,500, online spends about ₹1,500.
SBI Card PRIME at ₹2,999 + GST and SBI Card ELITE at ₹4,999 + GST. PRIME suits dining and grocery spenders; ELITE suits regular movie and lounge users.
Sometimes. Users report lifetime free PRIME and Sapphiro through employer or alumni tie-ups, and ELITE through SBI college camps, but none is a standard offer.
Axis Horizon and SBI Card ELITE list none. More in the lounge access directory.
This is my honest read, not formal financial advice. Do the fee maths at your real spend before you accept any upgrade.
