Finding the best credit card for fuel is harder than it should be, because almost every card claims a fuel benefit. Of the 166 cards on this page, most only waive the 1% fuel surcharge, which saves you a little and earns nothing. The cards that actually pay you back are tied to one oil company. Below, we sort them by pump, work out the rupees at ₹3,000, ₹6,000 and ₹12,000 a month, and name one pick for each kind of driver.

Most of the 166 cards in this directory offer only a fuel surcharge waiver, and a waiver is not a reward. It refunds the roughly 1% the pump adds when you pay by card, so on ₹6,000 of fuel a month a waiver-only card saves ₹720 a year and earns nothing. A fuel co-brand pays you on top of that, often 3% to 8.5%. Only 14 cards here are tied to a fuel brand.
The rule that decides everything: pick the card for the pump you already use. A BPCL card earns almost nothing at an IndianOil pump, and the reverse is true too.
Then look at where the rate stops, not the headline. IndianOil RBL Bank XTRA pays 8.5% up to about ₹13,333 of fuel a month. BPCL SBI Card OCTANE pays about 7.25%, but its points stop at about ₹10,000 a cycle. INDIANOIL AXIS BANK flattens at about ₹5,000; confirm in the MITC.
Finally, fees. At ₹3,000 a month OCTANE leaves you about ₹841 a year after its ₹1,769 fee, less than the ₹499 BPCL card. Our maths puts the break-even at about ₹3,300 a month; users put it at ₹3,500 to ₹4,000.
A waiver works only inside a band, often ₹400 to ₹4,000, and up to a monthly cap, so a ₹200 top-up or a single ₹5,000 fill may pay the full surcharge. Users across several banks report that the 18% GST on the surcharge is not refunded. HDFC Millennia waives 1% on fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000 but earns nothing on fuel. Free cards such as HSBC RuPay Platinum waive up to ₹250 a month, which matters only at ₹25,000 of fuel. More in our lifetime free credit cards directory.
If you searched for an SBI petrol credit card, these are the two. The ₹499 BPCL SBI Card suits a fuel bill under about ₹3,500 a month. SBI reverses its fee at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, up from ₹50,000 on 1 May 2026, per our note on the BPCL waiver change. OCTANE adds 4 domestic lounge visits a year and reverses its fee at ₹2 lakh. Both waive the surcharge only on BPCL fills up to ₹4,000, up to ₹100 a month.
The two IndianOil RBL cards split at about ₹4,000 a month: the ₹500 IndianOil RBL Bank card below it, the XTRA above it. Points post only on pumps RBL has mapped, so do one small test fill first.
For HPCL, IDFC FIRST Power costs ₹199 + GST, reversed at ₹50,000 a year, and pays up to 5% when you pay through HP Pay. The 6.5% you may have seen belongs to FIRST Power+. Users net about 3% to 3.8% after fees, and report ₹99 + GST per redemption, so redeem in big batches.
The co-brand for the pump you use most. For BPCL, OCTANE at ₹4,000 or more a month; for IndianOil, IndianOil RBL Bank XTRA; for HPCL, HPCL Super Saver or IDFC FIRST Power. If you fill anywhere, Kotak Cashback+ pays 3% at any station.
A fee of about 1% of the fill, added when you pay for petrol or diesel by credit card, with GST charged on top. On a ₹2,000 fill, that is ₹20 plus about ₹3.60 of GST.
A refund of that 1% surcharge, usually only on fills inside a band and up to a monthly cap. It saves money but earns no rewards.
Most HDFC cards in this directory do. Millennia waives 1% on fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000, MoneyBack+ up to ₹250 a billing cycle, and the IndianOil HDFC card up to ₹250 a cycle. See all HDFC Bank credit cards, or read our fuel credit cards guide.
This is my honest read, not formal financial advice. Banks change fuel caps and waivers often, so test one fill before you trust any card.
